4.0 out of 5 stars Good and quick Read, October 23, 2012
the book 12 Precious Anecdotes From Life by Payal Roy is a book of short stories that are connected by the characters within it. though this book is not dramatic or flashy it is a wonderful read. Each story is a look at a moment in time and is written so that not only do the characters learn something about them self and life but you as the reader looking in also get to come away with a lesson or two. i have to say also this was one of those books that for me was what i consider to be a quick read under two hours from start to finish.Over all a good book and worth a little of your time to go read and enjoy. Two thumbs up for this one.

I found this short book to be a delight. It was interesting to see how the characters interrelated to one another and the truths behind the stories can not be denied.

The truths should be kept in the forefront of all our minds and live in our hearts.

Synopsis : Ten months after the presumed death of a missing surfer, Maui SCUBA shop owner, Tina Greene, still can't accept her husband Hank’s death. Without a body, her undying hope for his survival lives on.

Jamey Dunn, an old boyfriend, arrives on Maui from his tour of duty in Afghanistan where he’s a dream jumper for the military. Tina’s inconvenient feelings for him resurface and, even though he dives on her boat daily, she tries to avoid the man who betrayed her years before. Nightly dreams of diving with Hank haunt her and the edge between dreams and reality blur.

Sensing danger, Jamey stays close to the woman he’s always loved but Tina turns to Hank's best friend, Noble for comfort. Thinking he can help, Jamey offers to visit her dreams. Tina is distrustful and hesitant to let him into her subconscious mind, but relents. As the threesome come closer to solving the mystery of Hank’s disappearance, danger sets in to reveal that one person is flirting with insanity, one is a traitor, and one is an imposter.

Editorial Review (Amazon link) : "Fantastic mix of women's fiction light with a twist of magic/psychic without being heavy handed so the 2nd chance love story stays the main focus. The surprises at the end are worth the wait!" Christine M. Fairchild, Editor Devil, Author, An Eye for Danger

Chapter Excerpt

Jamey sensed Kristina was going to black out before her eyes took on that blank expression of nothingness. “Katie, get some water.” He grabbed her small frame in a loose hug and lowered her to the carpeted floor. Shit, what’s going on? He’d sensed something horribly melancholy about her when he turned around. Tragedy, sadness. Damn this clairvoyance. Pinching the inside of her thigh made her flinch. Her gorgeous chocolate-colored eyes fluttered open. “Kristina?” She smelled like gardenia flowers. He couldn’t help notice, this close.
“What?” Her voice was paper thin. She reached for the dog that had moved in to lick her face. “How long?”
“Ten seconds.” Jamey watched her scan the room. Her carotid pulse was strong.
“I felt something weird.” She turned her head to look at him and he leaned back to put a few more inches between them.
“Faint or hungry or…overjoyed to see me?” He attempted a smile but she didn’t notice. Already she was struggling to sit up. “Just lay there for a bit.”
“I’m okay now.”
He remembered how stubborn she was and helped her up, his arm under her elbow. Unsteadily, she reached for the counter. Her face had more color but hell, she still looked terrible. Deathly.
Katie ran into the room with a bottle of water. “Oh, my God, Tina. What happened? Should I phone 911?” She stopped short of hugging her boss.
Kristina grabbed the counter’s edge for support while he took the water bottle from Katie.   “Thanks, sweetie,” Jamey said, “but I think she has low blood sugar. Can you find fruit or a carb?”
“We have juice in the back fridge."
“That’ll do.” Jamey nodded, not taking his eyes from Kristina. He cracked the water bottle’s seal and handed it over.
Tina took a swig and set it down on the glass counter.
“Deep breaths,” he advised.
She exhaled and then looked into his face. “James Dunn.” It was a statement.
He remembered when they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. “Kristina Greene.” Her cap logo said ‘Tina and Hank’s Dive Shop.’ Ah yes, the husband.
“I go by Tina now."
She backed away and he didn’t blame her. The way he’d left things, he deserved a slap. Or a punch. “I’m surprised you’re still on the island.” She’d said she wouldn’t last long on Maui if her parents didn’t get off her back.
They shared a smile. Hers looked forced. His felt the same way.
She stepped behind the counter, putting distance between them. “I thought I’d seen the last of you.”
“That’s not why you fainted?” He needed her to say it wasn’t his fault.
“Here’s POG.” Katie rounded the corner, balancing an overfilled Dixie cup. She stood and watched Tina gulp the sugary pink juice.
“That did the trick, thanks, Katie."
Her eyes had lost the foggy look. “Maybe you need food,” Jamey said. He’d take her for breakfast if she’d let him.
“No thanks.” She pulled her hat further down her forehead.
His heart still raced at the sight of her again, his palms still clammy. Kristina. Wow. Definitely recognizable as the spunky dive instructor he’d fallen for ten years ago, she still had that turned-up nose, big brown eyes and a face that said ‘naughty girl next door.’ He realized that he was staring at her like she was a textbook and he had a test coming up. “You should see a doctor, just in case,” he said.
A smile didn’t accompany her chuckle. “Believe me, I will. Excuse me.” She turned and disappeared into the back room with the striped dog on her heels.

Synopsis : After a stalker's attack, rock star Goldy Crossland flees L.A. for her secluded lake house in Northern Washington. Retired from the music business, she hopes to avoid both the press and her psychotic fan. But obscurity leaves her restless, and when a mysterious--and disturbingly handsome--new neighbor moves in, she can't resist spying.

Pete Bayer is undeniably attractive, but Goldy quickly realizes there's something strange going on in the log house across the bay. Is he a member of the paparazzi? Or a much more sinister threat? Despite her suspicions, Goldy can't deny her fascination with him.

When the press discovers her hideout, it's Pete who offers an escape route, but it comes with a price. Unwillingly drawn into his dangerous world, Goldy soon learns the reason behind Pete's secrecy--and her crush on her charming neighbor takes a deadly turn.

Editorial Reviews (Amazon link) : "From the opening glitz-and-danger concert scene, this story rocked my world! Nikki's insatiable curiosity and prying antics had me laughing, while her deep need for love and stability made her story richly human. Only a man as daring and thick-skinned as sexy Pete could handle such a tough woman let alone penetrate her guarded heart. And while danger lurks around every corner for this burned-out rock-star and this hunk in wolf's clothing, their near-fatal attraction was what kept me wide awake." ~Christine M. Fairchild, Editor Devil and author of An Eye For Danger

                          Chapter Excerpt

Chapter 1

Goldy ran onstage to the thunderous screaming of the Los Angeles crowd. The explosion of applause inside the Staple Center was the tangible evidence of their love for her; love that had fueled her drive over the years to get to this point. Soon she would desert them.

“Necessary Detour,” she mouthed to the band, not waiting for her ex-husband, Burn’s reaction to the song choice. It hadn’t been played since she vowed to never give it credit again. Written about a female stalker, the hit song had been dropped from their repertoire when the stalker slit her wrists in the front row of a Goldy concert.

Tonight, for personal reasons, Goldy wanted it to be the final song. A new crazed fan, code-named Shakespeare by the FBI, had threatened to kill her at the end of the concert, and, if he was successful, she was damned well going to have the last word.

The opening chords filled the cavernous arena and, recognizing the long lost hit, the crowd cheered to barely tolerable decibels.

            “You think you got me.

            You think we’re done.

            You think it’s over

            You haven’t won

Burn’s guitar screamed with the intensity of a locomotive as Goldy scanned the crowd, not knowing if she was staring into the face of the demon. Tonight she dared any one of them to take her on. The FBI had insisted on a bullet proof skin under her costume, and she could only hope that if it came to that, the material would save her life even if a quick bullet to the chest wasn’t Shakespeare’s style.

A dozen FBI agents peppered the audience looking for anyone who might have written six months’ of heinous letters that threatened to torture Goldy with unimaginable creativity. Trickling acid along her face, then watching her melt was Shakespeare’s style, to capture, torture, then relish in the hours, possibly days, that it took him to claim her life. That was his “fondest wish.” He’d been code-named Shakespeare because he quoted the bard, but there was nothing poetic about his twisted mind.

Getting closer to the end of the song, Goldy moved to stage-left where a stray bullet wouldn’t hit anyone else. With only two lines left, she pulled the microphone away from her lips to make a powerful run to the end and, as she did so, a shot of electricity pierced her hand and domino’ed along her arm to her shoulder, hitting her torso like a jack hammer. The pain was formidable. When her brain got the message, the hand flew open and the microphone dropped with a thud to the stage floor. Pretend nothing is wrong. Finish the song.

Goldy danced ran over to Burn’s microphone, acutely aware of the one lying behind her, like the pariah it was. Agent Gateman looked worried in the wings, two seconds from shutting everything down. She shook her head emphatically, her steely gaze calling one last shot.

Her left arm hung limp as she reached for Burn’s microphone with the right. What if this was the plan? Toy with her knowing she would persist? Then finish the kill with Burn’s microphone. Leaving it on the stand, she moved in and, hearing the approaching notes, took a deep breath to make the final run to the end. This time she was careful to keep her lips off the metal.

            It’s a Necessary Detour

            This detour’s ……..Necessary!”

She punched the air with her good arm, stepped wide and threw her head back--Goldy’s trademark pose. It punctuated the final moment of any Goldy concert.

The applause was deafening. She’d survived the final song, despite what Shakespeare said. “I shall end it all with your final note, my love.”

The six band members laid their instruments on the stage and moved downstage, applauding along with the audience in their adoration of the international rock legend--Goldy. What they didn’t know was that this was not only the last song of the tour, but the final tour in a twenty year career. No more CD’s, touring, concerts. No more Goldy.

“Goodnight everyone!” she shouted above the din. “I – HAVE – LOVED – YOU!” Gold confetti rained over the masses as she spun a sparkly Frisbee into the crowd that promised one family a vacation to Hawaii.

Applause filled the arena’s rafters. “Goldy! Goldy! Goldy!” Searing pain in her left arm reminded her that she’d just been electrocuted. She needed to get offstage. Taking a final bow with her partner and ex-husband, she hugged him with one arm and turned to her audience. The mass of people in her field of vision had been her reason for almost everything in the last twenty years. A wave to them, a bow to her band, and then Goldy left the party while she was still having fun.

Paramedics waited just out of sight, their dark blue uniforms a comfort to her worry. But it was her bodyguard, Dwayne, who lunged to catch her multi-million dollar backside before it hit the floor in a faint.

Faces were fuzzy, then clear, like focusing a camera. How long had she been out? Quinn was positioned at her left elbow, her tears dropping onto her mother’s sparkly costume. “Mom! Mom! Wake up.” Her voice gained volume with every second. No seventeen year old kid should have to endure as much as Quinn had in the last year.

“I’m okay, Sweetie.” Goldy tried to sit but one of the paramedics asked her to wait. “Almost done, Ms. Burnside. Just let me finish checking your stats.”

Ha! She wasn’t a Burnside anymore. Just then, the crowd parted and the real Burnside burst through to kneel at her feet. “Nikki!” He used her real name. “What the fuck?” Burn was eloquent in any situation.

Looking worse than her, she wasn’t surprised. He’d always needed more coddling than anyone. “I got a shock from the microphone, but I’m fine.” She’d hold to the story that it was simply an accident and Burn would believe it. “I’m still on the floor to let the paramedics do their job, nothing more.”

Burn had been an unintentionally horrible husband – negligent and unfaithful but never malicious. And everything they’d been through in their marriage had been necessary to achieve this end result which she wouldn’t have traded for the world. Her career and her beloved Quinn meant everything.

“Give her room.” One of the paramedics waved his arms to part the crowd, while the other helped her to stand.

“Thanks for your concern.” she said. Being Goldy had been a sweet ride for a very long time and seeing their worried faces, she was reminded of how much her staff counted on her. For years, she’d signed their pay checks, put food on their tables, financed college for their kids and, knowing all that was going to end for them wasn’t a pleasant thought. But it was a necessary detour.

“Enough.” She waved away the paramedics.  Goldy looked to the two bodyguards who rarely left her side. “Help me stand on this chair. I have an announcement to make.”

Excerpt from Stairlift to Heaven 2 (Further up the Stairlift)

April 1 2011. WATER.

It was a dark and stormy night. Actually it wasn’t dark and stormy when The Trouble and I, accompanied by Atkins and his wife Meg, set out for the pub.

But it very soon was. “Just an April shower,” I said, making light of it when it started to rain after we’d been walking for a few minutes.

“More like an April monsoon,” said The Trouble, a few minutes later, when not only had the shower failed to stop but had turned into a downpour.

It absolutely lashed down. Our destination, The Fox in the hamlet of Brookbottom, was just a mile away. If it had been ten miles away at the bottom of a lake we couldn’t have been wetter when we eventually arrived there.

For the last day or so the weather had been cold, given the time of year, so it was some consolation that there was a roaring fire in the lounge bar which would allow us to dry our outer garments. When we had placed them on the backs of chairs positioned round the fire a welcome round of drinks was called for.

“What are you having, Razza?” asked Atkins. “The usual?”

I nodded.

He turned to The Trouble. “How about you, Delma?”

“A gin and tonic please, Richard.”

“And for you Meg?”

Atkins’s wife thought about it for a moment. “I think I’ll just have a water.”

On hearing this Atkins just didn’t hit the roof. He went completely through it and a hundred feet up into the air. When he came down, no less apoplectic than when he went up, he shot daggers at Meg and said: “You bloody well will not have a water!”

Meg was at a loss. “Why not?”

“Why not? I’ll tell you why not. Because I’ve just walked through about a million gallons of the bloody stuff, that’s why not. I’m soaked to the skin with water. And you think I’m going to buy it? Well you’ve got another think coming!”

“That’s not water, it’s rain,” scoffed Meg.

“And where do you think water comes from?” said Atkins, like a ratty teacher addressing the class dunce.

Meg ignored his sarcasm. “Besides, it’s a mineral water I want. Buxton Water.”

“It probably is from bloody Buxton.” Atkins could have been right; the spa town of Buxton is only about ten miles to the south east as the crow flies and the wind was blowing hard from that direction.

“Yes but it won’t have minerals in it, will it?” Meg pointed out, as intent on getting her water as Atkins was to deny it her.

“Then I’ll piss in it for you,” said Atkins

Meg’s pained expression indicated that this wasn’t an addition she would welcome. An impasse having been reached The Trouble entered into the conversation. “What will you be drinking, Richard?”

“Not bloody water,” said Atkins.

“What then?”

“A pint of bitter.”

“Beer is ninety per cent water,” said The Trouble, matter-of-fact.

Meg shot a smug, triumphant smile at her husband.

“I’ll have a Scotch then,” said Atkins, and said to Meg: “So you can take that superior grin off your face.”

“Spirits are the same,” said The Trouble. “Ninety per cent water. If you have either beer or whisky you’ll be ninety per cent as guilty of drinking water as Meg is.”

At this point I had a King Solomon moment. “Why don’t you,” I said, addressing myself to Meg, “have a pint of bitter, but just drink ninety per cent of it?”

Then to Atkins I said: “And why don’t you have a pint of bitter and just drink ten per cent of it?”

Atkins had a Gordon Ramsey moment. “Why don’t you fuck off one hundred per cent and mind your own fucking business?”

In the end Meg had to go to the bar and buy her own water. Atkins told her he hoped it choked her. A couple of hours later, watered, if that’s an appropriate expression given the circumstances, our clothes dry again, we emerged from The Fox. It was still raining but not nearly as fiercely as it had been when we arrived there. The wind was still coming from the direction of Buxton. I thought of suggesting to Meg that if she walked along with her mouth open she could get some free Buxton Water but decided against it in case it got Atkins going again.
