Synopsis :  What happens when the deck is stacked against you…

From NFL rising-star prospect to wanted fugitive, Calvin Watters is a sadistic African-American Las Vegas debt-collector framed by a murderer who, like the Vegas Police, finds him to be the perfect fall-guy.

…and the cards don't fall your way?

When the brutal slaying of a prominent casino owner is followed by the murder of a well-known bookie, Detective Dale Dayton is thrown into the middle of a highly political case and leads the largest homicide investigation in Vegas in the last twelve years.

What if you're dealt a Dead Man's Hand?

Against his superiors and better judgment, Dayton is willing to give Calvin one last chance. To redeem himself, Calvin must prove his innocence by finding the real killer, while avoiding the LVMPD, as well as protect the woman he loves from a professional assassin hired to silence them.

Book Trivia :  The African-American protagonist is not stereotypical. While his race is significant, he does not moralize about the issue or his situation.

- The “find out who framed you to save yourself” plot has a twist in that Watters researches the crime online, primarily using analysis of character rather than physical evidence.

- Point of view is easy to follow but engagingly complex, with scenes from the perspectives of Watters, the detective, the cheating wife, and a hired assassin.

                        Chapter Excerpt

At exactly 6:15 p.m. on a Sunday, Calvin Watters parked his rusted Ford Taurus across the street from a vacant house. Climbing out, he put on a pair of sunglasses and scanned the neighborhood for any movement or potential hazards.
He moved to the back of the car and opened the dented trunk. It creaked in the still night as it slowly swung up. He pulled out a worn black leather case and slid it under his vest. Then he closed the trunk and headed for the door.
He'd been using the rundown house in the red-light district of Las Vegas as his workshop for three years. It suited his purpose. No interruptions, no inquisitive neighbors. Even the local police avoided the area.
He checked the perimeter again. At six-five and 220 pounds, with tattooed arms and gold chains dangling around his thick, muscular neck, a black man like him just didn't go unnoticed in Las Vegas.
The street was silent as he approached the house. Weeds sprang from cracks in the sidewalk and shattered liquor bottles blocked the entrance. The barred windows were broken and the screen door had been ripped off its hinges. His sense of smell no longer reacted to the stench of urine and vomit.
Calvin surveyed the area one last time. Extreme caution was one of the reasons he had succeeded in the business for so long. His habits had kept him alive. Satisfied no one had seen him, he trudged his way up the walk.
Even though he was the best in the business and had once enjoyed the adrenaline rush that came with the trade, the next part of the job made his skin crawl. His goal was to save the money he needed to get away, start over, but he didn’t know if he could last on the job long enough. That uncertainty made his life even harder.
He unlocked the door, stepped inside and shut it behind him. Heading for the basement, he took a narrow set of wooden stairs that creaked as he descended into darkness. His dreadlocks scraped cobwebs along the rough ceiling. He flicked the switch and a low-watt bulb cast dim light.
The tiny room had almost no furniture. The bare concrete floor was dirty and stained with dried blood. In the middle of the room, a lone wooden chair—double nailed to the floor—was occupied.
"Hello, James," Calvin said, his face expressionless.
James Pierce stared at him through bulging, fear-filled eyes.
"Sorry about the bump on the head, but I couldn't have you conscious when I moved you here."
When Calvin removed the case from his vest, he saw Pierce's pant leg moisten.
"I’m sure you’re wondering why your shoes and socks are off and your pant legs rolled up. We’ll get to that."
He laid the case on a small table, strategically placed next to the chair. "There's only one way out," he said, snapping open the lid. He knew his hostage saw one thing when he looked at him—professionally trained brutality.
He checked his watch. Pierce had been there for four hours. The waiting and anticipation alone were more than most men could handle. They often begged for their lives. It was a very effective method.
He stared at Pierce for a long moment and then turned away, his stomach churning.
Get a grip, Calvin! Hurry up and get it over with before you change your mind.
And lose the reputation he'd spent three years building.
He ripped the duct tape from the man's mouth and pulled out the old rag. "Time for me to collect."
Pierce gasped, breathing in air greedily. "Please, Calvin. I beg you. Don't do this."
"You're a degenerate gambler, James. Your expensive hobby and inability to pay has put you here. You knew the rules. They were laid out well in advance."
"No! Please…"
Calvin tried to block out the man's cries. A sudden dizziness overwhelmed him and he grabbed the chair to steady himself. Finish the job. "You know how this works." He stared at Pierce.
"I promise I'll pay. Just give me one more day. Please."
"You knew the rules. You've already had an extra week, James. You're lucky Mr. Pitt is a forgiving man, more forgiving than I am. He’s only counting that week as one day late. But if you aren't in his office tomorrow morning with all the money, you'll be seeing me again. Every late day will count as two. And I won't be so nice next time."
"I'll pay." Pierce sobbed.
Calvin heaved a sigh. "Relax. It'll all be over soon."
He leaned over the table. For effect, he took his time as he opened the leather case and removed the tools of his trade. "One day, one joint."
This was when most of them broke down all the way. And Pierce didn't disappoint him. A scream boiled from the man's belly and erupted like a relentless siren.
Calvin ignored Pierce as best he could. There were 206 bones in the human skeleton. A pro had trained him to use them all.
"Hammer or pipe cutter?"
"God, no!"
"Hammer or pipe cutter?" He threw a punch at Pierce's jaw, sending bloody spit into the air.
"Hammer!" Pierce screamed.
"Finger or toe?"
Pierce squeezed his eyes shut. "Toe."
Calvin stuffed the dirty rag back into the man's mouth. He turned and pressed play on the radio resting on the table, turning the volume up a few notches, careful not to bring attention to the house. The pounding, vibrating beat from Metallica not only drowned out his prey's moans of pain, but the sound took him back to his glory days. He removed a ball-peen hammer from the pouch and moved in on his quarry’s bare feet.
"Toe it is then."
He got down on one knee and lifted the hammer above his head.

Featured Ebook : On Thin Ice by Johanna van Zanten

Ebook : ON THIN ICE- short stories of life and dating after 50

Genre : Short Stories, Literary Fiction, Romance

Author : Johanna van Zanten

Amazon Stores : Kindle Edition

ISBN: 9781620957691 (Digital Book)

Reviews : Multiple 4.7-5stars (Amazon and Goodreads)

Blurb : Adrienne is the quintessential daredevil and a leader of her generation. Why?  Adrienne would rather try anything once, so she won’t have to say: “I wished I had tried that, but was too afraid”. Her stories and those of her friends are in many ways quite typical for many baby boomers, but only Adrienne with her fortitude and independence would cross the Atlantic to join a younger man practically unknown to her and much younger. Only she could start her own matchmaking agency after her divorce, when on-line dating did bored her. At age sixty, what will Adrienne do next to find a purpose in her life when retirement looms with an empty nest and no partner?

On Thin Ice is a collection of twelve interrelated short stories about Adrienne and her friends, from her divorce, to her first dating experiences on line at age fifty, and so much more, until a reconciliation with the past and her future life ends the collection on a positive and hopeful note.

This book is a complete novel as well, a fictional journey in about 60,000 words about a life, lovers, and daring moves--walking on thin ice--and may inspire baby boomers in their quest for meaning in their lives where marriage Till Death Do Us Part is not so common anymore. Readers of Adrienne’s generation, with higher expectations for longevity and hedonistic pleasures than any generation before, will be entertained and moved by Adrienne‘s adventures in Europe and in western Canada and be uplifted by its optimistic message.

Adrienne's journey takes the reader from the discovery of passion and ecstasy in her early twenties in Amsterdam to her first broken heart during the sexual revolution in the late sixties in the first story, Finding Ecstasy. Fort Good Hope is a story about a rather exotic kayak trip to the northern territories of Canada told in the first person that wakes a desire to immigrate in Adrienne.

The Redemption  story is the emotional recounting of Adrienne bringing her mother to the end of her life and is really an analysis of an incomplete, distant relationship between mother and daughter. In Love or Marriage the start of a marriage via immigration to the dismantling of it over almost 2 decades is a story that is very recognizable to many who were once married.

The story Matched! about Adrienne’s experiences with match making as the operator is a light hearted view of the elderly dating. Escaped: Adrienne and her friends are dating on line, and this is a story about one particularly strange date. New Love? recounts the start and failure of a relationship over four years with a British immigrant when emotional and other limitations surface gradually.

Carpe Diem is a moving and poignant story of the death of a friend at 50 (from breast cancer), who knew how to live,  and about her controversial choice of a mate from a Caribbean island. In Karma: a friend’s new lover turns into a stalker, which leads to the end of the affair. An Untimely Death - another early death, this time of a talented and successful designer.

In the story Roots and Blues the barriers to forming a relationship after 60 become clear, the short-lived beginnings while at a three-day music festival and its quick end before anybody gets really hurt; the advancing of the years of the players play a role. In Blueprint -- an important one in the collection –the resolution of a mother - daughter conflict is narrated, Adrienne now in the role as mother.

On Thin Ice follows a single baby boomer character Adrienne through from her early dating experiences around Europe through to middle age across a dozen masterfully written short stories. Johanna van Zanten takes her character around the world and on to the web from youthful passion to dabbling in online dating. The stories are crafted, gentle but rewarding reads with a strong central character. Although Johanna van Zanten was a new name to me in terms of her writing, I will certainly keep a close eye out for her next book.

One strength of Adrienne's adventures is not so much the way in which the dating world has changed in the last 45 years, but really the ways in which it remains the same. Many of the challenges, temptations and anxieties Adrienne experiences as a younger woman in the late 1960s will be instantly familiar to much younger readers today!

July 12, 2012 on Goodreads and Amazon:

At first glance, "On Thin Ice" is not the sort of genre that I would be immediately attracted to. One gets the impression that it is a "woman's book," whatever that means. It is, indeed, the story of a woman from the Netherlands, growing up there, emigrating to Canada in later life. It's subtitled "Short Stories of Life and Dating After 50." But there is a lot more to it than that.

It appears to me to be largely autobiographical; the realization that these events actually happened in some form or another makes the stories a lot more interesting than if they were pure fiction. What I found particularly intriguing is the insight into Dutch culture, which makes the tales even more absorbing.

Johanna van Zanten's writing is crisp and polished. The events speak for themselves without slathering on heaps of purple prose resulting in a forced narrative which so many indie published authors, and too many traditionally published authors, fall prey to. The purpose of the book is to tell the life story of Adrienne (Johanna?) without trying to dazzle with literary acrobatics. "On Thin Ice" succeeds very nicely.

The characters are well fleshed out; they are real; you care for them. The dialog rings true. As I said, not a genre I would normally be drawn to, but the glimpses into Dutch culture were, for me, mesmerizing. That alone kept me reading. Imagine the impact this book would have on those who actively seek out these kinds of stories? Four strong stars. I hope Johanna does well with this book.

In my informal but honest review I must share that I was excited to get this book downloaded as I had been anticipating reading it. I read it in about one day, which speaks volumes because if I am not captivated by a book I will easily get distracted and find other things to read. I loved it. I know the author as a friend and colleague, and it was interesting to read and hear her voice in my head.

She categorized this book as fiction, although, I could pick out scenarios that sounded awfully familiar! I really think that there needs to be a continuation or part two of On Thin Ice. I love the author’s description and insight into Adrienne’s experiences. I laughed reading this book. I cried as well. I rejoiced for Adrienne. I believe that the purpose of reading, at least for me, is to draw out feelings, to escape, to walk in another’s shoes albeit a brief moment. Books allow us to share knowledge, experience and perspectives in life. I applaud

Johanna van Zanten in creating such a well written book. ( clap clap clap...standing ovation!) What is next for Adrienne????!!!

I have to admit it was an entertaining book to read. The way the author describes Adrienna's home land had me right there with her; it was as if I could see every street and building and could visualize her romps with her lovers. I enjoyed watching Adrienna go from an almost prudish girl to a much stronger vibrant women where she found she had her own mind and was beginning to allow herself to be her own boss. Being a single women in my 50's, I could relate to the online dating and it was nice to see someone actually describing their experiences. I loved the little bits of humour but would of like to see more of that! All in all I enjoyed this book...it was refreshing and almost didn't want it to end!

Blurb :  Filled to the brim with forbidden love, an ancient evil, and a nation in disrepair, Empyreal Fate is a tale of riveting bravery and mortal corruption. The land of Llathala lingers on the brink of war between men and elves, a dark history surrounding each race. Stirred by tensions of the land, a shadow of  the past reemerges, taking precedence in reality and consuming the very soul of mans’ mortal weakness. Darrion, the son of a poor laborer, is ensnared in a hostile world, forced to choose between loyalty to his king or the counsel of the elves.

Yet Fate has other plans in store, tying his course to Amarya, an elven royalblood of mysterious quality and unsurpassable beauty. But this forbidden connection incites betrayal from members of their own kin, marking them as traitors to the crown. In a land torn asunder, only Fate’s decree can allow such love to coexist with an ancient enmity.

Gwen - 5 STARS-- "The beauty and grandeur of times now lost to us are rediscovered in Empyreal Fate, the first of what I hope is many in this fantasy saga. Empyreal Fate is a story of young love but more importantly, it is a story of sweeping passions. Hatred, revenge, and what it means to fight for the things that you treasure are among the themes explored in this tale.

Though the main characters are compelling, I found myself sympathizing with a few of the minor characters deeply as well because of the subtleties that they display throughout the course of events. Of them all, I admit to a special fondness for Drevan. While I can't say too much for fear of revealing plot details, I grew to understand his actions even while I didn't always agree with them.

The character motivations fascinated me throughout Fate and I look forward to watching how they continue to change and intertwine as the saga continues.Another aspect of the novel that I particularly enjoyed was the language that Hunter employs throughout. She casts a magical spell, evoking the sense of her world without making it distant. She is clearly kin to Tolkien with the way that she employs thoughtful and creative use of language, magic, and detail.

A beautiful look into another universe... I recommend you take a peek for yourself!"

James - 5 STARS-- "Step into the age of Empyreal Fate where heart's desire and man's desire clash in epic proportions. It truly is a world of forbidden, yet necessary, love for without it the world cannot be whole. Both kingdoms, man and elf, have become rotten from the inside out. Each side feels this, knows this, but no one will admit to its existence. In an effort to find a mutual connection, Darrion and Amarya start down a path which can only end one way.

The book is very intriguing, drawing one into a story that is very much alive. It is told from several character point of views, giving further insight into the distinctive world as each sees it. Once it begins, it does not let up, but carries the reader though until the last words on the last page, and then leaves you desiring to know more. It is nice to know the author intends to continue the series, and I very much look forward to the next installment. If you like reading about new worlds, this is definitely a keeper!"

Beth - 5 STARS-- "Empyreal Fate is a story of the land of Llathala. Llathala is a land occupied by elf and human and they have a tenuous peace treaty which is slowly unraveling. War seem eminent, corruption from within both sides wish to rend this land apart for personal gain. Darrion, human son to a farmer's family runs across Amarya, elf princess, in the woods while hunting for food. Can Darrion and Amarya overcome the forbidden friendship, feeling of love, an evil possession and ultimately fight to save their people from the corruption that lies within.

Empyreal Fate truly is a wonderful story telling of a land created by Rachel Hunter's fantastic imagination. She utterly enwraps you into a totally new world that elves, fairies and humans live and fight for survival. I love the way she uses language to make you feel that you are in another time, era, or in this case world. Empyreal Fate had me from the Prologue till the end. Looking forward to reading more about this exciting new land Rachel Hunter has created. "
