Chapter Excerpt

Where to start? When a character appears in a novel, we, as writers, must get into that character’s head. We must become him, at least while he is on stage. If there are twenty characters then we’ll have to slip into the persona of each of them. Be the fiancĂ©e while she is in the scene, think like she does, speak as she would. Be the gardener. Be the neighbor.

When creating the character in your reader’s eye, it will be tempting to write something like, “She was exceptionally tall for a woman, close to six feet. She was thin with long fingers and had red hair. Her eyes were hazel and more oval than round. She had a long slender nose and full lips. She was a cautious, non-trusting type.” Sad to say many writers fall into this easy method of describing a character. A better and more effective way is to flesh out the character as the storyline progresses. Have someone else notice or comment on her height. A waitress could stare at her red hair. The character’s own actions and dialogue can let us know that she does not trust people. Develop her as the story moves forward.

Remind yourself, too, that less is more. Readers bring their own experiences to a novel. The writer can be minimal in his descriptions of a character. The reader will fill in what the writer leaves out and readers will visualize your story people. Interestingly, they won’t all see her the same.

NAMES

Give your characters tags and traits or at least give them to your major characters. We’ve briefly discussed giving your characters names and they’re all going to need one. Maybe not a shopkeeper referred to briefly in the book as ‘the shopkeeper,’ but the rest of them will. You may not know right off what name is right for a particular character even your protagonist. If you feel you have given him the wrong name, you can refer to him by his role or his temperament, such as “Don’t make it your business,” Grumpy said, or Protagonist said or Builder said. At some point you are either going to feel the right name, your character will tell you his name or you’ll go on a Google search looking for a name that will suit him.

While writing Destinies, I was well into the character of the ship captain’s daughter but she wasn’t moving along well for me. I figured out that she was wearing the wrong name. When I changed her name she came alive. After that, whenever she was in a scene, she spoke naturally, acted in accordance with who she was. She played her part and I became the scribe, capturing what she did and said.

If a difficult great-aunt is named Jennifer, she isn’t going to feel right to your readers and she won’t feel right to you, either. You probably won’t find her easy to write. But change her name to Hortense or even Cordelia  and watch her start to take on a life. A sweet, scatterbrained great-auntie named Gertie will most likely have you smiling as you allow her to play her part with hands that flutter around blue hair while she gives off the scents of talcum powder and old lace.

A word of warning: avoid giving your people sound alike names. You don’t want your female characters to be named Betty, Barbara, Beth, Bonnie and Bernadette. If you read The Brothers Karamazov you probably remember, with agony, the challenge of keeping all the characters straight. Think carefully, too, before you tag your characters with names from highly read books, current or past. It’s difficult to give your characters personalities of their own if you use names like Hermione, Hamlet, Scarlet or Spock.

Synopsis: Two hundred years in the future, human beings have traveled to the stars, settled colonies on fifty worlds, and finally discovered intelligent life: the Drakk'Har—large, cold-blooded reptilian creatures who see human beings not as equals, but as food. War was unavoidable. Ill-prepared for the sudden and vicious conflict, humanity finds itself on the losing side.

After three years of retreating from the onslaught to gain time, humanity has dug in its heels, built up their forces, and begun to fight back. When intelligence identifies the distant Mindon star system as a source of Drakk’Har warships, a major engagement begins. Star Command Fleet Nine strikes the first blow in a new offensive campaign.

During combat operations on Mindon-2, the plan goes horribly wrong. Casualties mount on both sides. The men and women on the raid find themselves in a merciless crucible that threatens to change them forever. The Drakk'Har know victory can only come by overwhelming the humans with savage brutality.

Predation – Sample excerpt
Staff Sergeant Julio Mendez of the 121st Special Forces Detachment lay in his hillside listening post in total silence. His CKP-12 automatic rifle lay cradled on the narrow berm of earth before him. The CKP-12 was standard issue to all Special Forces troops. The rifle was designed to operate in all environments, including total vacuum and even underwater to a limited degree. Mendez thought about that as he lay there. From the amount of rain that had fallen, the weapon may as well have been underwater. The falling moisture had been continuous for three days and had varied from drizzle to downpour in unpredictable swings.

Mendez ignored the cold dampness that was his constant companion. The shallow camouflaged position he occupied had been constructed six days previously by his section. Since then, it had been manned continuously. Three listening posts surrounded a Special Forces base camp sited in a minor depression on top of a densely overgrown hill. The hill was designated as number 237—its height in meters.

Hill 237 overlooked two strategic river junctions, one to the northeast, and the other to the west. Mendez could see neither of those junctions from his location. However, his position was the most important of the three. A crude, sprawling town lay two kilometers away across a narrow river bordered by dense swamp on both sides. The town itself was half in the swamp, resulting in algae-infested water being present throughout many of the streets. This didn’t seem to upset the occupants, who moved through the water with ease.

The homes of the town occupants looked like hollowed-out trees. They were stubby, without leaves, and covered by thick lichen and fungus. All of the structures appeared identical in shape, but each was a slightly different size. Mendez estimated the town population to be approximately eight thousand.

A short distance beyond the town lay a sprawling complex of one-story structures. They were arranged around several hundred immense constructions of various sizes. Details were impossible to discern, as the constructs were liberally covered with a thick, fuzzy, green and brown growth. Mendez used the word “constructions” because he was sure that they were not natural. Yet, he had never seen any of the complexes' workers add anything to them.

Several tunnel entrances lay at the edge of the town. They appeared to head under several of the largest constructions. Mendez had seen many creatures from the town report to these tunnels on a regular schedule. He deduced over time that the occupants worked beneath them on regular shifts.

The complex and surrounding area had been the focus of his special forces team for almost a week. They were ordered to observe and make note of any patrols, construction facilities, defenses, or unusual activity in this area, along with any traffic on the river below.

Mendez’s view of the town improved as the rain finally stopped. With the most subtle of movements, the soldier slowly placed the town in the center of his rifle scope and selected full magnification. Few town occupants were visible, as their green color matched the surrounding foliage perfectly. Earth scientists classified the creatures as reptilian. Few live specimens had been collected because of their ferocity. Mendez had been told they called themselves Drakk'Har.

After three years of fighting them, the humans had built up basic knowledge about their history. An adaptive and cunning race, the Drakk'Har were capable of interstellar travel. Over seven hundred years, the Drakk'Har had conquered seventy-three worlds. The inhabitants of the conquered worlds were placed in one of two categories—for consumption or eradication. Those marked for consumption were shipped back to Drakk'Har colonies. They selected the healthiest of each species for breeding purposes to ensure future food stock. Any determined to be unsuitable for breeding were exterminated. Drakk'Har were cold-blooded, both physically and emotionally.

Mendez watched one of the Drakk'Har as it left its home and moved toward one of the tunnel entrances near the complex. The creature walked on its thick hind legs, propelling itself in a slow, upright waddle. Mendez knew that the slow walk was deceptive. On all fours, an adult could sprint up to thirty kilometers an hour for very short distances. They were all excellent swimmers and spent a good portion of their time in water. Although they were air breathers, they could remain under water for periods of up to half an hour. More precisely, thirty minutes was the longest anyone had ever observed them underwater. No one really knew the creatures’ limits.

His observations were interrupted when the tactical contact lens he wore in his right eye flashed red three times. Something had just crushed several nanosensors that had been spread on the adjacent trails. He knew that “something” weighed more than twenty kilos, as that was the minimum weight required to set them off. A loud rustling sound to his left confirmed that, and he focused his attention on that area. Only his eyes moved. The noise was too regular and consistent; something large was moving through the thick vegetation. Then he heard a branch snap. Mendez knew it could not be his troops making the noise. His people would approach only from the rear after tugging twice on a piece of staked commo wire to announce their presence. Moving nothing but his jaw, Mendez keyed the COMM switch between his teeth twice. He paused and then keyed it five more times. The signal traveled down the commo wire toward the camp behind him.

Excerpt from Why She Left Us

There is no reason for it either. It’s unfathomable, inexplicable that this love should have come over me as it has; and just as I expected, I am unable to deal with it and have now begun to wonder if I should seek to cast it off as an undesirable invasion of the safety and serenity that have always clothed my existence up until now. I know nothing of such matters. I am completely naĂŻve and inexperienced as to the ways a woman adopts in her efforts to please the man she loves. This feeling I have within me may very well never even have the chance to blossom forth, as I am sure my sheer ineptitude and awkwardness will doom it to failure.

Oh, dear Lord, what am I to do? I have spent this entire day thinking about him, fantasizing what it will be like when he returns – if he returns! But nothing material has resulted from any of this. I am alone in this house right now, just as I was alone all day long, although a number of familiar faces were around me from time to time. I am still alone, and I long for the unexpected, knowing that I am doomed in so wishing something to happen that will, no doubt, never happen at all.

He will not come back. This longing inside of me will never be appeased. It will simply remain there, stagnant and distressing and unsettling – yet, at the same time, so sweet and uplifting that it frightens me. When I woke early this morning and realized that I had actually fallen in love with him, I had such an extreme desire to do some good on this earth. I sprang out of bed, threw on some rags, and went outside to do the gardening that Wayne was to have done. I would have painted the whole house, too, except that he had taken everything with him in his van when he left our house yesterday, and I didn’t have enough money to go to the hardware store. And since it was Saturday, I couldn’t gain access to the money I have in my account.

So, I just went out there on my hands and knees and did all the gardening that needed to be done. I even relished doing it, too, because I kept saying to myself: If Wayne does come back and finds that I’ve done all of the gardening for him, maybe he’ll smile at me. God, he might even look right at me. Then I would see the color of his eyes and the glow of his emotions and the piercing and blinding light of his soul. Maybe he’ll come back here unexpectedly and find me here on my hands and knees. And maybe he’ll then put his strong, pure hands under my elbows and lift me up from the ground and tell me that I have found favor in his sight. In his sight, yes, because he’ll be looking directly into my eyes as he tells me this. And then I’ll laugh and tell him that I’m doing all of this for him and that, in doing it for him, it affords me the greatest possible joy. And then it’ll be his turn to laugh, and he’ll suggest that we do the rest of the gardening together, and the two of us will sink to our hands and knees and dip our hands into the dirt. Together.

Later on, I fancied, I would step into the garden against the side of the house while Wayne wasn’t looking. In that garden grow the most gentle and delicate white roses I have ever seen. There is one in particular that is scarcely more than a bud, but it is pure and unblemished and, as yet, untouched by human hands. That is the rose I would pluck, while he wasn’t looking, and it is that rose that I would offer him, quietly and gently, without having to say a single word to him because my soul, not my lips, would be speaking to him as I extended the pure, white rose and watched him take it from me and place it between the curls of his blond hair. And it would stay there for the next few days so that I could always see it there and be reminded of the beautiful intimacy of that moment.

We both would be silent, too, if by chance we were to find a fresh, clear fountain of distilled water in an imaginary park very far from here – a park that exists only in one’s dreams. We would dip our hands into the fountain and cleanse them of all of the soil from the garden. Then, still without saying a word, I would dip my whole body into that holy fountain so that all my past sins would be wiped away; and in that one instant, I could stand before him in total purity, I myself a pure, white rose freshly plucked, and I would extend my heart to him and watch silently as he took it and pressed it against his own, and our two hearts would be joined forever.

I would like to kiss the earth at this time; and if it were humanly possible, I would kiss the sun. There is so much that is beautiful, so much that is heart-stopping in its gorgeous simplicity, so much that I want to share with this man. If God would only let me have the opportunity to do this! If only I could see him again! Just once! I want to open so many doors for him. I want him to be able to see the light of Heaven, to breathe its untainted scent into his lungs, and to hear the divine music that is now in my soul – the music that is known only to angels. I want to give him my hands so that he can press them between his own, my face so that he can hold it against his chest, my heart so that he can consecrate it with his love, and my soul so that he can unite it with his own. These are the fantasies and dreams that form the substance of my longing – a longing which my rational mind tells me can never be pacified. Not in the real world we are all forced to inhabit.

Blurb : Art teacher Daniel Benedetto has been renting Maureen Kelly’s upstairs apartment for the last six years. Even though he has cystic fibrosis, a chronic disease that requires a lot of maintenance and the occasional hospital stay, he has always made time for his students, his own art, and Maureen’s daughter, Caitlin. Now that she’s a budding teen painter, he makes space for her in his Life Drawing class. But failing miserably and intimidated by the class full of adults, Caitlin appeals to Daniel for private lessons.

Maureen reluctantly agrees, with a warning for Caitlin to take what he offers seriously, because Daniel, at thirty-four, is living on borrowed time. While great strides are being made to find a cure for the genetically transmitted disease, when Daniel was born, children with CF rarely survived past their teens. Caitlin, however, refuses to define Daniel by his disease. He’s a person first, a friend who understands her, a fellow artist. Unlike his overprotective, overbearing sister, who does his grocery shopping and frets over his every move, Caitlin doesn’t see Daniel as someone to pity or take care of but someone to care for.

As she spends more time with Daniel, her feelings for him grow more complicated and confusing. Seeing glimpses of his private life, she can only watch in torment as other people, especially women, treat Daniel like a freak because of his condition. Convinced one of those women is about to hurt him, Caitlin makes one very bad decision.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, July 25, 2012

This review is from: Drawing Breath (Kindle Edition)
Drawing Breath is a book for grown ups. It is compassionate, non-judgmental, deftly and succinctly written, with nothing extraneous or ostentatious. It tells a relatively simple yet psychologically astute tale of how love can sometimes prove not quite enough. Or does it? In the world of Laurie Boris's novel, unkindness and mean-spiritedness can sometimes blossom into generosity, illuminating a grey-area world with sudden stark flashes of brightness, empathy and tenderness.

Saving the pivot on which the novel turns--the morally complex act of an infatuated teenage girl unmindful of more serious consequences--for a full two-thirds of the way in is a stroke of genius. We are treated to the slow buildup of characters as if they've been painted by the main protagonists themselves, revealing new facets as the light changes and layers are added. A gentle creative art teacher with a serious illness.
A teenage girl struggling with the intensity of shiny new emotions. Her tired mother. A lonely trophy wife. A woman whose every action is informed by her pain and anxiety over her brother's condition. There is no hurry to get where we're going; time feels oddly suspended, almost irrelevant between the actions and emotions of the players on this quiet stage. And yet, as becomes clear, time is everything. Time, or its march onward, will thwart and torment. Will defeat love, even. For some. For most?

Cryptic as all this sounds, my aim is not to spoil the gentle spell of this courageous novel by over describing plot details. At heart, this is a love story. There are elements of an eternal love triangle, aspects of betrayal, dalliances with something darker, but the overall sense left with this reader was of something incredibly emotional and generous in spirit. I recommend this book very highly to anyone who appreciates a well-wrought plot told in a literary style that nonetheless refuses to revel in its own considerable artistry.

Four and a half stars (as close to five as anything I've read in years).

5.0 out of 5 stars Laurie Boris' DRAWING BREATH Reminds Us To Appreciate All That Life Has to Offer, August 6, 2012
This review is from: Drawing Breath (Paperback)
In Laurie Boris' DRAWING BREATH we are able to see that sometimes it is those who are younger that teach the most valuable lessons to us. It is then up to us to receive it and apply it.

Because of an illness Daniel Benedetto has become known as more than just a gifted man. For some he is to be pitied. Not the case of Caitlin Kelly. She sees and loves him for not what he has but what he brings to the world and does for her personally. It is in this conflict of emotions and taboos that Boris leads the reader, and we are able to see exactly what it means to live and what brings about real life.

What I enjoyed the most about this book was the way the author allowed the arts to weave a story that is so much like all of our own. Each day is a blank canvas for us to paint the next chapter of our lives. We can choose whether we will stifle ourselves or allow all that we are to shine through.

Enchanting yet with lessons that are true to life, DRAWING BREATH by Laurie Boris reminds us to appreciate all that life has to offer.
