4.0 out of 5 stars Good and quick Read, October 23, 2012
the book 12 Precious Anecdotes From Life by Payal Roy is a book of short stories that are connected by the characters within it. though this book is not dramatic or flashy it is a wonderful read. Each story is a look at a moment in time and is written so that not only do the characters learn something about them self and life but you as the reader looking in also get to come away with a lesson or two. i have to say also this was one of those books that for me was what i consider to be a quick read under two hours from start to finish.Over all a good book and worth a little of your time to go read and enjoy. Two thumbs up for this one.

I found this short book to be a delight. It was interesting to see how the characters interrelated to one another and the truths behind the stories can not be denied.

The truths should be kept in the forefront of all our minds and live in our hearts.

Here is a chance to gift your children, your little niece or nephew, your little grandchild this summer, an exceptional book that tells a wonderful story and enables children to learn what's good and what's right.

Let us read a few thoughts that author Jane Whiteoak has shared with us today.

Author Jane Whiteoak                     Thomas and the Lily Pond at Amazon

 Q. Why have you focused your writing in the children's book genres? Who inspired you for your current creative works? What is so special about Thomas and the Lily Pond?

Author's words -  I have placed my focus on children's books and have thus far stayed with that genre. Perhaps in the future, I may writie a book for Young Adults.

Nature is a great inspiration, I love animals and often wonder if they could speak what would their experiences and life stories be? My grandchildren are an inspiration to me also, particularly the four year old, as children are so open and honest. They'll say anything and question everything! They're completely uninhibited, which is really refreshing. I really enjoy spending time and engaging in conversation with young children, they've yet to be influenced or judged by societal standards.

I would like to thank the readers for taking the time to read this blog and hope that everyone takes bullying very seriously. If a child is bullied, it leaves an indelible impression on them for the rest of their lives. This can impact self esteem, lack of confidence in people, trust issues and ultimately lifestyle choices. Bullying starts at a young age, I've witnessed it and must say that, I was shocked to see this trait amongst three- five yr. old children!

My goal with "Thomas and the Lily Pond", is to reach young children, so that they may become aware of this behaviour and recognise it, if unfortunately confronted by it, through absolutely no fault of their own.

I thank the readers for taking an interest in this subject and really hope that they see, as described in the book, how peer group pressure can also inadvertently, play a role in promoting a bully to an even higher platform. Perhaps this new generation, through knowledge and awareness can eventually eradicate this despicable trait completely.

Blurb : The book is for children ages 4-6 yrs. old. It can be read to the children in a pre-school/ Kindergarten setting by a teacher or relayed to them as a bedtime story by parents or grandparents.

Thomas and the Lily Pond is about a group of happy and very contented animals living in a forest. Their world is turned upside down by the arrival of a huge frog named Bruno. His primary goal is to take over the lily pond as his new home and to manipulate the group of animals through flattery. Since Thomas the turtle, is the sole occupant in the pond, of which the frog desires, Bruno starts to immediately bully the docile hard working turtle.

Through peer group pressure the other animals, slowly turn on their once beloved friend. His is left all alone, while the others plot, a midnight food heist under Bruno's direction. Chaos ensues, when they arrive back to the forest, as a wild storm erupts and sweeps them all into the rough, swirling waters of the river and the lily pond. Many cannot swim and call out for help as the only one left on shore is Thomas. He does not hesitate to help his friends and attempts a daring rescue.  The most difficult and dangerous one of all to save from drowning is Bruno, the nasty, bullying frog!

Book Chapter Excerpt

Binnie and Corinna flew on ahead, high over the tree tops, keeping a watchful eye on their friends walking beneath them. Spike and Roman led the entire group. Spike was very certain that he could defend them all from any strangers. Roman, also felt very important, as he would be a hero by taking this great big bag, piled to the very top with delicious food.

Sammy and Rupert scurried quickly, marching on either side of the skunk and raccoon. They ran ahead, then back and forth, all the while trying to hurry everyone along. There was enough star light shining through the evening sky for them to see the forest path. They crossed under the berry patch leading to the ditch, and marched along the road.

Princeton was at the very end, as he was much slower than the others. The animals all trudged along and trudged along and trudged along.

While marching, Sammy suddenly had a thought and said, “It’s too bad, that Thomas could not come with us, and he would have so much fun!”
“You heard what Bruno said, Thomas is too pokey!” called out Spike.
“Anyway,” answered Roman, “I’m doing the work here. I can carry it all by myself, we don’t need Thomas!”
“Still, he is a hard worker, and our friend. Maybe he would have liked to come along?” sighed Rupert
“No,” said Roman. “We don’t need him with us, didn’t you listen to Bruno? I’m doing this job!”

The group finally stopped walking as they had arrived at the place, marked with an “X” on the map. Binnie and Corinna soared high above the city houses watching for strangers, while Roman eyed the enormous bag, set inside a large metal can.

“This is it!” said Roman, in a very excited whisper.
“SH-SH-SH-SH,” said Sammy, all the while jumping up and down in delight. “Someone might hear us!”

It was dark outside now, the only light came from the houses, along the tree-lined street. They were at the end of a very long driveway. Roman got a grip on the large can while he carefully began to climb slowly upward. He grasped the middle of the big handle and up, up he went. As he was nearing the top, to remove the lid and look inside, the great big container suddenly began to SWAY… BACK AND FORTH, BACK
AND FORTH, THEN  IT TIPPED OVER!!!

“Look out, look out,” shouted Rupert.
“It’s falling, it’s falling!” shouted Sammy.
Sure enough, the enormous tin toppled over with Roman now lying underneath it. The bag opened up and pieces of food started to spill out all over the street!

Synopsis : After a stalker's attack, rock star Goldy Crossland flees L.A. for her secluded lake house in Northern Washington. Retired from the music business, she hopes to avoid both the press and her psychotic fan. But obscurity leaves her restless, and when a mysterious--and disturbingly handsome--new neighbor moves in, she can't resist spying.

Pete Bayer is undeniably attractive, but Goldy quickly realizes there's something strange going on in the log house across the bay. Is he a member of the paparazzi? Or a much more sinister threat? Despite her suspicions, Goldy can't deny her fascination with him.

When the press discovers her hideout, it's Pete who offers an escape route, but it comes with a price. Unwillingly drawn into his dangerous world, Goldy soon learns the reason behind Pete's secrecy--and her crush on her charming neighbor takes a deadly turn.

Editorial Reviews (Amazon link) : "From the opening glitz-and-danger concert scene, this story rocked my world! Nikki's insatiable curiosity and prying antics had me laughing, while her deep need for love and stability made her story richly human. Only a man as daring and thick-skinned as sexy Pete could handle such a tough woman let alone penetrate her guarded heart. And while danger lurks around every corner for this burned-out rock-star and this hunk in wolf's clothing, their near-fatal attraction was what kept me wide awake." ~Christine M. Fairchild, Editor Devil and author of An Eye For Danger

                          Chapter Excerpt

Chapter 1

Goldy ran onstage to the thunderous screaming of the Los Angeles crowd. The explosion of applause inside the Staple Center was the tangible evidence of their love for her; love that had fueled her drive over the years to get to this point. Soon she would desert them.

“Necessary Detour,” she mouthed to the band, not waiting for her ex-husband, Burn’s reaction to the song choice. It hadn’t been played since she vowed to never give it credit again. Written about a female stalker, the hit song had been dropped from their repertoire when the stalker slit her wrists in the front row of a Goldy concert.

Tonight, for personal reasons, Goldy wanted it to be the final song. A new crazed fan, code-named Shakespeare by the FBI, had threatened to kill her at the end of the concert, and, if he was successful, she was damned well going to have the last word.

The opening chords filled the cavernous arena and, recognizing the long lost hit, the crowd cheered to barely tolerable decibels.

            “You think you got me.

            You think we’re done.

            You think it’s over

            You haven’t won

Burn’s guitar screamed with the intensity of a locomotive as Goldy scanned the crowd, not knowing if she was staring into the face of the demon. Tonight she dared any one of them to take her on. The FBI had insisted on a bullet proof skin under her costume, and she could only hope that if it came to that, the material would save her life even if a quick bullet to the chest wasn’t Shakespeare’s style.

A dozen FBI agents peppered the audience looking for anyone who might have written six months’ of heinous letters that threatened to torture Goldy with unimaginable creativity. Trickling acid along her face, then watching her melt was Shakespeare’s style, to capture, torture, then relish in the hours, possibly days, that it took him to claim her life. That was his “fondest wish.” He’d been code-named Shakespeare because he quoted the bard, but there was nothing poetic about his twisted mind.

Getting closer to the end of the song, Goldy moved to stage-left where a stray bullet wouldn’t hit anyone else. With only two lines left, she pulled the microphone away from her lips to make a powerful run to the end and, as she did so, a shot of electricity pierced her hand and domino’ed along her arm to her shoulder, hitting her torso like a jack hammer. The pain was formidable. When her brain got the message, the hand flew open and the microphone dropped with a thud to the stage floor. Pretend nothing is wrong. Finish the song.

Goldy danced ran over to Burn’s microphone, acutely aware of the one lying behind her, like the pariah it was. Agent Gateman looked worried in the wings, two seconds from shutting everything down. She shook her head emphatically, her steely gaze calling one last shot.

Her left arm hung limp as she reached for Burn’s microphone with the right. What if this was the plan? Toy with her knowing she would persist? Then finish the kill with Burn’s microphone. Leaving it on the stand, she moved in and, hearing the approaching notes, took a deep breath to make the final run to the end. This time she was careful to keep her lips off the metal.

            It’s a Necessary Detour

            This detour’s ……..Necessary!”

She punched the air with her good arm, stepped wide and threw her head back--Goldy’s trademark pose. It punctuated the final moment of any Goldy concert.

The applause was deafening. She’d survived the final song, despite what Shakespeare said. “I shall end it all with your final note, my love.”

The six band members laid their instruments on the stage and moved downstage, applauding along with the audience in their adoration of the international rock legend--Goldy. What they didn’t know was that this was not only the last song of the tour, but the final tour in a twenty year career. No more CD’s, touring, concerts. No more Goldy.

“Goodnight everyone!” she shouted above the din. “I – HAVE – LOVED – YOU!” Gold confetti rained over the masses as she spun a sparkly Frisbee into the crowd that promised one family a vacation to Hawaii.

Applause filled the arena’s rafters. “Goldy! Goldy! Goldy!” Searing pain in her left arm reminded her that she’d just been electrocuted. She needed to get offstage. Taking a final bow with her partner and ex-husband, she hugged him with one arm and turned to her audience. The mass of people in her field of vision had been her reason for almost everything in the last twenty years. A wave to them, a bow to her band, and then Goldy left the party while she was still having fun.

Paramedics waited just out of sight, their dark blue uniforms a comfort to her worry. But it was her bodyguard, Dwayne, who lunged to catch her multi-million dollar backside before it hit the floor in a faint.

Faces were fuzzy, then clear, like focusing a camera. How long had she been out? Quinn was positioned at her left elbow, her tears dropping onto her mother’s sparkly costume. “Mom! Mom! Wake up.” Her voice gained volume with every second. No seventeen year old kid should have to endure as much as Quinn had in the last year.

“I’m okay, Sweetie.” Goldy tried to sit but one of the paramedics asked her to wait. “Almost done, Ms. Burnside. Just let me finish checking your stats.”

Ha! She wasn’t a Burnside anymore. Just then, the crowd parted and the real Burnside burst through to kneel at her feet. “Nikki!” He used her real name. “What the fuck?” Burn was eloquent in any situation.

Looking worse than her, she wasn’t surprised. He’d always needed more coddling than anyone. “I got a shock from the microphone, but I’m fine.” She’d hold to the story that it was simply an accident and Burn would believe it. “I’m still on the floor to let the paramedics do their job, nothing more.”

Burn had been an unintentionally horrible husband – negligent and unfaithful but never malicious. And everything they’d been through in their marriage had been necessary to achieve this end result which she wouldn’t have traded for the world. Her career and her beloved Quinn meant everything.

“Give her room.” One of the paramedics waved his arms to part the crowd, while the other helped her to stand.

“Thanks for your concern.” she said. Being Goldy had been a sweet ride for a very long time and seeing their worried faces, she was reminded of how much her staff counted on her. For years, she’d signed their pay checks, put food on their tables, financed college for their kids and, knowing all that was going to end for them wasn’t a pleasant thought. But it was a necessary detour.

“Enough.” She waved away the paramedics.  Goldy looked to the two bodyguards who rarely left her side. “Help me stand on this chair. I have an announcement to make.”

My Dear Veronica,
Because I am one of the world’s best-selling romance novelists, I get a lot of mail. Perfumed flattery, most of it. Lonely women send me fan letters or marriage proposals accompanied by risqué self-portraits. Occasionally the post delivers something disturbing, such as the box of homemade, blood-filled chocolates once gifted me by an especially ardent admirer. In any event, I reply only with an autographed headshot. I sign them, May the arrows of Eros find their mark for you. Bonne chance, Tom Rimbaud.
However, your note, and the difficult circumstances you describe, touched me. To wit: your husband has promised violent retribution should you continue “wasting time” pursuing your literary ambitions. Veronica, I am writing to tell you, you are not alone. I too know what it’s like to have dreams threatened by a tyrant. And so I’ve decided to share with you the story of my escape, in the hope it will inspire your own.
Would it shock you to learn that I, two-time finalist for the Romance Novelists’ Association’s Writer of the Year award, the author of The Indiscreet Infanta, The Sweetest Taboo, and The Ghost Who Warms My Bed, have been accomplice to many acts of rape, mutilation, and ritual murder? I’m afraid it’s true. If I were a man, my soul would be surely be destined for Hell. But I am not a man. The Cro-Magnon in rimless spectacles from my author portrait?  A model my literary agent met on Fire Island. Not me at all. Not even the same species.
No, a tulpa, the Tibetans would call me: a thought made concrete, a manifested fantasy. I am an unnatural creature imagined into being by a man named Charles Kraft. A master of the blackest magickal arts, Kraft conjured me to be his private joke, his butler, his scapegoat and patsy. But mostly I was created because he needed someone to curate his books.
Sitting atop a Queen Anne house on San Francisco's Fell St., our attic apartment was crammed front-to-back, floor-to-ceiling with Kraft’s library. Books were stacked on every countertop, spilled from the unused oven, and moldered in the bathroom’s clawfoot bathtub. Ancient and crumbling, stained and sticky, the volumes numbered in the tens of thousands, so many the old man had forgotten half of what he owned. Would that I could forget now!
